Wood Pellet Guide

Choosing, Storing & Using Wood Pellets

What's the "Best" Wood Pellet to Buy?

Honestly? That's up to you. Ask ten pellet stove owners what the best pellet is, and you'll get ten different answers — and none of them are wrong. Here's the honest truth about choosing a pellet, and how CT Pellet makes sure every bag we sell is the real deal.

Not All 'Premium' Is Created Equal

While "best" is subjective, quality isn't, and that's where we don't compromise.

Some pellets on the market are labeled "premium" but don't actually meet that standard. The only way to really know is lab testing — so we do it for you. Every brand CT Pellet sells is lab-tested and retested to confirm it meets true premium-grade standards. Our full lab analysis records are kept on file and available for review at our warehouse.

We don't just say our pellets are premium — we can prove it.

How Wood Type Affects Your Burn

Choosing a pellet isn't just about color — it's about how it burns in your stove. Here's what actually changes between wood types, so you can match a pellet to what matters most to you:

Hardwood pellets (oak, maple, birch, cherry blends)
Generally burn cleaner with lower ash content, meaning less frequent cleanout. A dependable choice if minimizing ash and maintenance is your priority.

Softwood pellets (like Douglas fir)
Typically deliver higher heat output (BTU) per pound, often burning hotter and longer per bag. A strong choice if maximizing heat is your priority, though ash content can vary by product.

Blended pellets
Combine hardwood and softwood to balance heat output with a cleaner burn — a middle-ground option if you don't want to fully prioritize one factor over the other.

Keep in mind: color is a loose visual indicator of wood type, but the real differences that matter — heat output, ash content, and burn length — come down to the specific pellet, not just its shade. That's exactly why "best" is personal: it depends on whether you're chasing maximum heat, minimum cleanup, or a balance of both.

Every pellet we carry — hardwood, softwood, or blend — is lab-tested to confirm it meets true premium-grade standards, so however you prioritize heat, ash, or burn length, you're choosing from a lineup that's already been verified.

Where To Begin

If you're new to pellet stoves, try a few different brands we carry and see what performs best in your stove. Once you find one you like, stick with it — no need to switch unless price, availability, or performance gives you a reason to.

Every brand in our lineup meets true premium-grade standards. Whichever you choose, you're buying with a level of confidence and proof you won't find anywhere else.

Wood Pellet FAQs

Below are answers to questions we hear most often. If you don't find what you're looking for, or want help choosing the right wood pellets for your stove, call us at (860) 482-4391.

How many bags of wood pellets do I need for the season?
How many bags of wood pellets do I need for the season?

This depends on your stove's efficiency, how large a space you're heating, and how cold your winter runs. As a general guide, many homeowners heating a single space use roughly 100–150 bags (2–3 tons) per season, while those using pellets as a primary whole-home heat source may need more. Call us at (860) 482-4391 and we can help you estimate based on your setup.

Can I order pellets now and have them delivered or pick them up later?
Can I order pellets now and have them delivered or pick them up later?

Yes. You can purchase your pellets anytime and have us store them at our warehouse until you’re ready for delivery or pickup. This can be especially beneficial during annual promotions, such as our Spring Sale, when you can take advantage of seasonal savings without needing to store your pellets at home. Please note, all fuel purchases must be delivered or picked up by March 31 of the following year.

How should I store my wood pellets?
How should I store my wood pellets?

Pellets need to stay completely dry — even small amounts of moisture cause them to swell and break apart, ruining the bag. Store them indoors or in a dry, covered area like a garage, shed, or basement, off the ground if possible. Keep bags sealed until you're ready to use them. If you don't have the space to store a full season's supply, ask us about our Buy-Now, Take-Later option.

Can I store wood pellets outside?
Can I store wood pellets outside?

It's not recommended long-term. If pellets must be stored outside temporarily, keep them elevated off the ground, fully covered with a waterproof tarp, and in a spot with good drainage. Any dampness will compromise the bag.

How far in advance should I order for delivery?
How far in advance should I order for delivery?

Since deliveries are scheduled directly with our team, we recommend calling as early as possible during peak season (typically fall through winter), as delivery windows can fill up quickly. Ordering during our Spring Sale is the earliest — and often most cost-effective — way to guarantee your supply. Call (860) 482-4391 to check current availability and schedule your delivery.

Do you deliver, or do I need to pick up my order?

We offer delivery, scheduled by quantity ordered. Once you place your order, give us a call to arrange delivery timing that works best for you.

How often should I clean my wood pellet stove?
How often should I clean my wood pellet stove?

Routine cleaning depends on how often you run your stove and the ash content of the pellets you're burning, but most manufacturers recommend cleaning the burn pot and ash areas every few days of regular use, with a deeper full cleaning at least once per heating season. Always refer to your specific stove's manual for manufacturer recommendations.

Why is my pellet stove producing more ash than usual?
Why is my pellet stove producing more ash than usual?

This can be a normal result of the specific pellet you're burning — some wood types naturally produce more ash than others — or it may indicate the stove needs cleaning or maintenance. If ash output changes suddenly, it's worth checking your stove's airflow and burn settings.

Are wood pellets safe to store near my furnace or heating equipment?
Are wood pellets safe to store near my furnace or heating equipment?

Keep pellets a safe distance from any open flame, heat source, or ignition point, and store them in a well-ventilated area. Avoid stacking bags directly against heating equipment.

What's the difference between hardwood and softwood pellets?
What's the difference between hardwood and softwood pellets?

Hardwood pellets generally burn cleaner with lower ash. Softwood pellets typically produce higher heat output. Blended pellets aim to balance both. (See our full breakdown on this page for more detail.)

Can I mix different brands or types of wood pellets?
Can I mix different brands or types of wood pellets?

Yes, this is generally safe, though burn performance may vary slightly as you transition between bags. Many customers do this without issue, especially when trying to find their preferred pellet.

What should I do if my pellets get wet?
What should I do if my pellets get wet?

Wet pellets will swell, crumble, and become unusable — they can't be dried out and reused effectively once significantly compromised. Discard any pellets that have absorbed moisture and store the remaining stock in a dry area going forward.

What other heating products do you sell besides wood pellets?
What other heating products do you sell besides wood pellets?

Yes. In addition to premium wood pellets, we also carry Envi Blocks and coal. Both are excellent home heating options, offering reliable heat, long burn times, and dependable performance. Whether you're heating with pellets, blocks, or coal, we can help you choose the right fuel for your home.

What is a hopper on a pellet stove?
What is a hopper on a pellet stove?

The hopper is the storage compartment that holds the wood pellets your stove uses for fuel. Pellets are automatically fed from the hopper into the stove as needed, allowing it to provide steady, consistent heat with less hands-on attention than a traditional wood stove.

How long will a hopper full of wood pellets last?
How long will a hopper full of wood pellets last?

It depends on the size of your stove’s hopper, the heat setting, and how much heat your home requires. Larger hoppers can hold more pellets and generally allow your stove to run longer between refills. Always refer to your stove manufacturer’s recommendations for expected burn times and pellet capacity.

Does hopper size affect which wood pellets I should buy?
Does hopper size affect which wood pellets I should buy?

Not typically. Most residential pellet stoves are designed to burn standard-size wood pellets. The quality and characteristics of the pellets, along with your particular stove, are more important considerations than hopper size when choosing the right wood pellets.
